Hy folks,

Quick question.
I recently got my tins back from paint, and now I need to get the rear fender back on.
All the wiring and stuff is kinda a pain.

Anyway... on the inside side walls of the rear fender I'm supposed to re-attach two "wiring clips".
Here's a picture...



Issue #1)
They seem to have two little metal pegs that plug into coorisponding holes on the fender.
Doesn't seem like much, is that all there is to hold these things on? The service manual doesn't show ANYTHING holding them on.

Issue #2)
Not that it matters, becuase the little metal pegs are NOT fitting anymore. They're either really loose, or bent ever so slightly enough that they don't want to go in at all.

So I guess my questions are...

1) Can anyone verify how these things attach?
2) If the pegs are it - and they area bent/broken/no-good... are they replaceable?
3) If not... should I just Gorilla glue the damned clips on?

So it turns out they're pop rivets. if I want to replace these things I'm going to have to buy a pop rivet gun and then the right size minutes. Or I suppose I could always use glue.

 

I just installed an under fender taillight on my bike and it came with under fender wire clips that had 3M adhesive tape on them. Something like the pic below. maybe you could grind down the back of yours and use 3M tape to secure them.

I just riveted mine on....not sure why because they don't hold any wiring after bobbing my fender.

 

ok so quick update.

1) Got some replacement rivets.
2) Got a had rivet "gun"

Using it was easy and actually kinda fun.

BUT...

My first attempt is a little loose (must have moved the gun a bit) - and so I need to remove one of my freshly done rivet.
All of the methods I see for doing this involve drilling and/or some serious manual working. Both of which risk the new paint that's on the fender (especially with a guy like me attempting this(

Any suggestions on REMOVING a pop rivet from a fender?

 

Drilling or grinding the head off is your only options, drilling is the only semi safe way to do it. Go slow and make sure your bit stays in place, it isn't real simple but I do this all the time with no problems.

just had a thought...

Since the rivet is loose... could I just push it up so that the head is out a way from the fender and use a dremel cutting tool to cut the head off?

 

If it will push up that far I'm sure you could but be careful, to me that would be scarier than drilling but to each their own. Different things work for different people, best of luck to you!

 

If they are not too loose and you are worried about drilling (only method i.ve used) could you take a little piece of wire (really thin) and wind it between the clip and the fender to take up space?? Then maybe just a little dab of silicon to keep it in place. I know, not the best way to fix, but it might work and save the paint if your against drilling.

The rivet is pretty loose.
I'd bet I can dremel the underside off (where the paint isn't an issue) and pull it through.

I'll let you all know how it goes.
