1997 Heritage.
Ok....at idle it stumbles and spits out of air cleaner. I have not changed a thing (jets, exhaust, settings...etc) Friday it ran fine. The only thing I did was ride in a toy run. Most of the time ran in mostly 3rd gear. That wouldn't cause anything would it? Checked plugs = not fouled

Please help!

 

I would say it is something electrical. Not familiar with Evo's though. If you have a meter and a service manual, use the search feature on the forum and look for similar conditions.

 

Might just be bad gas or a little dirt in the carb. Add seafoam and ride it hard for an hour

 

Thanks. I'll give that a try. Do you know how much to use? Does this create white smoke the whole ride?

 

The Seafoam has directions on the bottle as far as how much to use. No white smoke as you ride. I'd also check fuel filters and any vacuum lines that are connected to the carb.

 

Electrical issues generally cause backfiring through the exhaust, not the intake. Coughing/spitting through the carb usually indicates a lean condition. I would check for any intake leaks first, and if that's not the problem I would check the pilot jet for any blockage.

 

+1 Evo's and prior were notorious for leaking intakes. I always sprayed some WD-40 around the intake but starter fluid will work as well. Start the bike and spray it on the intake where the carb mounts to it as well as at the mounting points on the heads. If it is leaking you will get an increase in idle rpm and with the WD you will smell it coming out of the exhaust.

I know this thread is pretty old but I was reading thought it and thinking, no no, you might have a air leak that has leaned you out.
Glad IronAss came to the rescue here...
The reason I reading though these the 96 Evo I just picked up is having a real issue starting. I mean wick the hell out of it trying to get it to lite..
