HELP with Road King Charging System !!!!!!!
Need Help Please !!!!!
'95 Road King w/ 18,500 miles. 8 month old battery. Just returned from Biketoberfest in Daytona. Rode bike for four days (1-2 times a day) for 5-15 miles at a time. By 4th day bike would barely start. Got home and reconnected to trickle charger and it took 15 hours to charge. Does this sound more like a bad stator or voltage regulator ?? THANKS !!! (have had this problem for a year or so; keep battery connected to a trickle charger at home so bike always starts up; usually take relatively short trips, so have not had a problem. Do not have lots of accessories and lights. Thanks !!!

Charging
I've heard that you have to ride it 20-30 minutes each time you use the starter to charge the battery back to capacity. I don't think you rode it enough to charge it back up. If the battery was bad the tender would not have charged it up again.
Try putting a multimeter on the battery...It should read 12.5-13.2 volts if it is fully charged.
Start the bike and read the battery voltage again...It should read 12.2-15 volts. If it doesn't it is either the voltage regulator or stator.
BTW Check to make sure your battery terminals are tight and making good contact on both ends for both positive and negative leads. (common problem).

I've read that idling the charge voltage is 12.8-13.2 v., take the rpm upto about 2200 and the charge voltage should be 13.8-14.2 v. Have you checked the DIY thread on HDF for testing the charging system?

Tested battery and battery is good. Think it is stator or voltage regulator. Was hoping symptoms might lead one to believe it's one thing over the other.

check all fuses. if not id pull the plug on the regulator. then start the engine use a volt meter to test the stator, i forget the correct voltage, but that should help you tell if its the stator or the regulator. my bet is the regulator though.

unplug the regulator on the stator side should measure 22-24 volts ac while running. now meter the regulator (where you unplugged the stator) should be [U]no[U]voltage on the dc scale. Any voltage you got a bad regulator. Check the Stator with the scale on ohms should be little to no ohms or a bad stator. good luck
