I just posted same question under a previous thread - 06 Dyna owner manul wrong - so I apologize fo the waste of bandwidth if you already saw this. I wanted a different subject line.

Here's the question. On the site here, there were some early posts about the 06 Dyna manuals being reversed in their depiction of the tranny drain plug vs the oil drain plug. My 06 Dyna (FXDI35) manual shows the oil drain plug as being on the left side of the engine, rearward of the kickstand, oriented horizontally. I see the secong plug under the engine, more toward the center or other side of the engine, and oriented vertically.
Do I have the updated manual? Is what I'm saying above correct for the 06? The oil drain plug is horizontal, rearward of kickstand?

Also, I just hit 600 miles - I'm going to change the oil only - how much will it take without a filter change? I have the 06 dyna oil cooler. Will it fully drain without a filter change and should I allow an extra 1/2 quart for that? I will have the filter change done with my initial check up at 1200 miles by the dealer. At that time I'll most likely have them put synthetic in both the tranny and crankcase.

 

I always change the filter with the oil, it's worth the nine dollars. Especially the first change, where some manufacturing debris is present. The drain plug is the horizontal plug behind the kickstand facing the left side of the bike. With the filter it takes 2.5 quarts. Without maybe a 4 ounces less, so 2.25 I would bet. You'll need to find out what your oil cooler capacity is from the manufacturer and allow for the difference. I wouldn't assume. Overfilling is worse than underfilling.

 

Thanks - I usually do same - oil & filter evry 1000 miles or so. The weekend just caught me without a filter and 600 miles on the bike after a 250 mile day yesterday. I fugure a no filter oil change is good enough this once until the 1000 dealer services, where I can get all three fluids changed.
