try to avoid late 04 and 05 models..valve stem seal problems but most have been fixed by now..

Yep, I have an 05 and had to have major motor work done because of that. Luckily I was still under warranty, however since it got fixed I haven't had an issue with it.

 \\;I ride an 07 and love it! If you read this forum long enough you'll swear your cyliders will melt, the tranny will explode, and the bike will wobble out from under you. Thats how I ended up adding fuel/moto stage one, Ids, and the TRW stabilizer. Go figure \\;

2002 \\; because it has the last major frame modification before the new 09 \\;frame and 02 was the last year of the \\;good crank bearing. 08 would be the next year for me because of ABS.

00 thru 02. Twin cam 88 with a real crank bearing. You can increase the displacement without worrrying about the lower end. The present day lower ends are made of butter.

All those are good years. Look for a low mile, well kept bike and hunt for VALUE. There are some who are selling for fairly low dollar. I think the 6 spd and cruuise control are very nice options.
