Default 2006-2007 front master cylinder leak?

Local rumor is starting to have it that the 2006 and 2007 Softails (might affect the whole range) are having leak issues with the front master cylinder. A buddy of mine, who rides a 2006 Fatboy, had to replace the gasket and cover because of a leak. He got to talking with one of the techs at the dealership and he mentioned that they had done a number of these replacements on '06 and '07 bikes recently. After hearing this, I took a look at my master cylinder and it looks like the gasket is bulging a bit. Supposedly it might have something to do with the switch from DOT 5 to DOT 4 brake fluid at the Moco. Anyone else hear or experience this issue?

After having my first service done, I had noticed that mine was "seeping" around that seal.

Once asked about it, they said that it was becoming an issue, and that they would replace it.

Have not had an issue w/ it since.

I've noticed this too.......I recently changed my brake line to SS braided and after putting the cover back on the master cylinder after bleeding I noticed it leaking. I took it back off and just "snugged" the screws, didn't really tighten them too much and it quit leaking. I think overtightening the screws distorts the gasket.

I've got close to 8,000 miles on my '06 and it's showing no sign of brake fluid weep on my front cylinder...but I've never had to remove the cover yet.

I recently learned this also after putting on the SS brake line... I overtightened and it made the gasket bulge which cause a seeping. I backed it off and have had no problem since.

Certainly not comforting stuff. Looking at mine, my guess is that is has been overtightened. Sounds like H-D needs a new torque spec on the phillips screws holding that cover down.

6000 miles on my 06, no leaks. I replaced the black cover with the chrome HD one at 2500 miles. So far so good.

Happened to me when I replaced the stock MC for the chromed one. It leaked for about a week and then it dried out for good. No further issues.

Good luck,

Mimo.
