HAS ANYBODY TRIED A 6 SPEED CHANGE OVER ON SPORTSTER.WHATS A GOOD BRAND AND DID IT MAKE A DIFF.I GOT 02 1200C.HWY SPEED I THINK A 6 SPEED WOULD BE NICE.

the EVO engine in sportster is a one piece case that includes the tranny. I am not aware of any gear sets that fit a sporty. Your other option is to change drive gears. When you do, you give up acceleration off the line and get lower RPM's at highway speed.

 

How hard is it to change drive gears? And what would you need to change to for highway cruising? Spinning at 3000-3200rpm gets old after a while.

 

I've seen this question come up before and I don't think anyone makes a 6 speed setup and probably never will for a sporster. Sportys are designed to be a little higher revving and at least for me on the 1200 unless I'm going over 75 constantly for long periosd of timeI would never see the need for a 6th gear and even then it would be a waste. Fact is most of the time if I'm cruising around 50-55 I'm only in fourth gear to begin with otherwise the engine is bogging and needs to downshift.

Anyway - Back to need for 6th gear. 70-75 is really all that I have done on a HIGHway cruise. It may be nice for a lower rpm for town cruise!

 

I am not the originator of the line. I did clean it up so as not to offend some with sensitive sensibilities.......if you know what I mean. I have another favorite also.......Youth and enthusiasm are offend defeated by age and treachery!

Well it is no longer 2007, it's 2014, and there is stuff available for the Sportster rider that wants to run all day at 70-80 mph, comfortably, economically and doesn't cost an arm and a leg!
For the 1991-2003 crowd you can slow down that engine and reduce the rpm vibration with a 30 or a 32 tooth pulley available now for Sportsters. The 32 is like putting on the international 55 tooth rear, but doesn't require a different belt. Yes, changing the front pulley to more teeth makes you slower off the line, but for just driving the only thing you notice is more mph in every gear and a little more throttle to get you going.
Everyone with an 883, 2004+, is stuck with a super low primary ratio, engine to trans, the 1200's are not. Due to the lower ratio all 883's run about 500 rpm higher at 70 & above than a stock 1200. This is why the 1200 guys don't understand why the 883er's want a 6th gear; all the 883er wants is what the 1200's already have, a comfortable rpm at 70+ mph.
There is now a 32 tooth front pulley for Sportsters! The 32 doesn't require a different belt. The 32 drops the rpm at 70 about 500 rpm. All it does is give an economical solution to giving 883ers the same final ratio as a 1200!

 

sportster does not need a 6th gear, honestly it doesn't, the gears are plenty tall enough, the 1200 will cruise smoothly all day long at 70-80-90 mph.. and get nearly 50 mpg while doing it.


I think the 6th gears are really to get a lower first gear to make maneuvering large bikes easier at slow speed.
